ACSW social worker lookup: verify an Alberta RSW.
The Alberta College of Social Workers publishes a public register with a legend that explains registry type, status and status reason. This page walks through the legend so a result makes sense before you rely on it.
The register lists registered social workers (RSW) in Alberta, and the College says RSWs can provide their practice permit for review. A search returns at most 25 records, so enter every field you know. Each result shows a member type (General, Provisional or Courtesy), a status (such as Active Practice Permit) and optional practice enhancements such as Clinical Registry.
How the register limits and ranks a search
The register page states that, for security, a maximum of 25 records can be searched at once and advises you to enter all known fields for a more accurate search. It also tells you to search at the time you need the information, because statuses change during the year and new registrants are added. Results load slowly at times; the page asks for patience while information loads.
Each result row shows the registrant, registration, effective and expiry dates and status, and flags for conditions and disciplinary actions. The College does say what the identifier is: the RSW number is the unique professional registration identifier given to each registrant, it does not change, and it stays with the registrant throughout their registration history. It does not publish a digit pattern, so this page does not give one.
Open the ACSW public register
The register is hosted on the College’s Alinity public directory. Enter what you know and read the legend underneath.
The legend is the useful part
Most register pages show a result and leave you to guess. The ACSW register publishes definitions under the search box, and they change how you should read any row. Member type has three values. General Registry means registered social workers with no outstanding registration requirements. Provisional Registry means registered social workers who are completing requirements, including supervised practice hours. Courtesy Registry means RSWs from another jurisdiction who are temporarily or remotely practising social work in Alberta.
Status has five values: Active Practice Permit (an active ACSW practice permit), Inactive (a member not actively practising and without a practice permit, for example on parental leave), Withdrawn (retired, left the profession, province or country), Suspended (practice permit suspended by ACSW) and Cancelled (registration and practice permit cancelled). Only the first of these means a person is currently permitted to practise.
Status reasons and what they signal
A separate status-reason field explains why a status is what it is. The legend lists Discipline Action, Discipline Sexual Misconduct, Discipline Sexual Abuse, Pending Discipline Outcome (a suspended practice permit pending a discipline outcome) and Practice Limitation (a temporary or permanent limit on the permit). The row can also show icons for Has Conditions and Disciplinary Actions. If any of these appear, read the full record and contact the College for detail rather than assuming the worst or the best.
Practice enhancements and the RCSW title
The register recognises additional skills. A Clinical Registry entry in the legend means an RSW with a voluntary practice enhancement gained through additional education and supervised practice in assessment, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental illness and emotional and behavioural concerns, which allows the title Registered Clinical Social Worker (RCSW). An Approved Clinical Supervisor is an RCSW with advanced training in supervision. A separate authorization covers restricted psychosocial interventions for mental illness that grossly impairs judgement, behaviour, capacity to recognize reality or the ability to meet ordinary demands of life.
The RSW number, and the retired RCSW number
The College’s notice for insurers and third parties explains the identifier. Each registrant’s RSW number is the unique professional registration identifier granted when registration begins, and it does not change throughout their history with the College. The same notice says the College discontinued the separate RCSW number and no longer publishes a separate clinical registry or listing. The clinical practice enhancement is now linked to the registration and practice permit, and appears on the public register, where the practice enhancements granted on a permit can be viewed under Details. It adds that insurers and third parties can accept the RSW number for contracting, billing, credentialing and verification, and can verify registration status, including the clinical designation, on the public register. In short, anyone quoting an old separate “RCSW number” is quoting something the College says it no longer issues; ask for the RSW number and confirm it on the register.
Provisional registrants are real registrants
People are often alarmed to see Provisional next to a social worker’s name. The College’s provisional registration page explains that to practise social work in Alberta you must be registered and hold an active practice permit, and that registration begins with a provisional practice permit. A provisional registrant may use the title RSW and has the rights and responsibilities of an RSW, but must practise under the supervision of an RSW in good standing on the general registry, and cannot run an independent private practice or hold the clinical enhancements. The supervised practice requirement is 1,500 or 1,000 hours depending on the pathway, completed within the first year.
A worked example (hypothetical)
A parent is told that a counsellor named “Robin Example” (made up) at a private practice in Calgary is an RSW. This describes no real person.
Search by surname and first name. If Robin appears on the Provisional Registry, the title RSW is allowed, but private practice is not independently allowed, so ask who supervises. If Robin appears as Inactive or Withdrawn, there is no active practice permit, and the practice should explain. If the row shows Clinical Registry, the RCSW title is available. Finally, look at the status reason and the icons; a Practice Limitation or condition marker is a prompt to phone the College. If there is no match, the College lists a phone and email beneath the search for difficult cases.
What this page does not cover
- It does not run the register search or store what you type; there is no form on this page.
- It does not state a registration-number format, which the register does not publish.
- It does not cover social workers regulated in other provinces; British Columbia and Ontario have their own registers.
- It does not cover counsellors, psychologists or therapists who are not social workers.
- It does not judge whether a given social worker is right for you or what a disciplinary outcome means.
Frequently asked questions
How do I verify a social worker in Alberta?
Use the public register on the Alberta College of Social Workers site (Verify a Social Worker). Enter as many fields as you know, because a search returns at most 25 records.
What does Provisional Registry mean?
The register legend says these are registered social workers who are completing registration requirements, including supervised practice hours. A provisional registrant can use the RSW title but must practise under supervision.
What does Active Practice Permit mean?
It means a registered social worker holds an active ACSW practice permit to practise social work. Inactive, Withdrawn, Suspended and Cancelled are different statuses.
What is an RCSW?
A Registered Clinical Social Worker: an RSW on the Clinical Registry, a voluntary practice enhancement based on additional education and supervised practice in assessment, diagnosis and treatment of mental illness.
What do the status reasons and icons mean?
The legend lists reasons such as Discipline Action, Pending Discipline Outcome and Practice Limitation, and icons for Has Conditions and Disciplinary Actions. Read the full record and contact the College for detail.
Which number identifies an Alberta social worker?
The College says the RSW number is the unique professional registration identifier given to each registrant and that it does not change. It discontinued the separate RCSW number, so the clinical practice enhancement is linked to the RSW registration.
Why can I not find a social worker I know is registered?
The register works best with every known field filled in and shows at most 25 records. If you still cannot find the person, the College lists a phone number and email on the register page.
Does TNAADO verify social workers?
No. This page explains the register legend and links to it. It does not look anyone up or collect anything.
