Net worth = everything you own (home, savings, investments, vehicles, other assets) minus everything you owe (mortgage, loans, credit cards, lines of credit). The tool subtracts your debts from your assets and compares the result with the published median for your age group.

What is compared: the median net worth of Canadian economic families and unattached persons in each age group in 2023, in 2023 dollars: under 35, $159,100; 35 to 44, $409,300; 45 to 54, $675,800; 55 to 64, $873,400; 65 and older, $738,900. All ages: $519,700.

Limits: a median is the middle household, not a target, and Statistics Canada's definition of assets and debts may differ from the way you count your own. This tool shows position against the median only; it does not estimate a percentile.

FAQ

What is the average net worth by age in Canada?

This page uses medians, not averages. Statistics Canada reports 2023 median net worth of $159,100 for those under 35, $409,300 at 35 to 44, $675,800 at 45 to 54, $873,400 at 55 to 64 and $738,900 at 65 and older, in 2023 dollars.

Is median or average net worth the better benchmark?

The median is the middle household, so a few very wealthy households do not pull it up the way they pull up an average. It is the usual benchmark for "where do I stand".

Does net worth include my home?

Yes. Net worth is total assets minus total debts, so the value of your home counts as an asset and your mortgage as a debt. Enter your own totals the same way.

Why is the 65 and older median lower than the 55 to 64 median?

The published figures show that pattern for 2023. The table does not explain it, so this tool does not either.
