How the numbers are worked out
- Grams of alcohol: volume (mL) × ABV ÷ 100 × 0.789 (density of ethanol, g/mL).
- Standard drinks: grams ÷ the size of a standard drink in each country.
- Calories from alcohol: grams × 7 kcal. Sugar in mixers, juice, beer or wine adds more and is not counted.
- Weekly total: standard drinks per day × days per week, compared with Canada’s Guidance on Alcohol and Health.

Canada’s weekly risk zones (2023)
Worked example. A 473 mL can at 5.5% holds 473 × 0.055 × 0.789 = 20.5 g of alcohol: 1.5 Canadian standard drinks, 1.5 US drinks, 2.6 UK units, and about 144 kcal from alcohol.
Canada’s guidance also says more than 2 standard drinks on one occasion raises the risk of harm to yourself and others. Sources (opened 2026-10-04): CCSA, Canada’s Guidance on Alcohol and Health (16 Jan 2023); Health Canada, standard drink of 17.05 mL / 13.45 g; NIAAA, US standard drink 14 g; NHS, alcohol units (10 mL, 8 g); NHMRC, Australian standard drink 10 g.
FAQ
How many standard drinks are in a bottle of wine?
A 750 mL bottle at 12% holds 71 g of alcohol: about 5.3 Canadian standard drinks, 5.1 US drinks and 8.9 UK units. Pick "custom", enter 750 mL and your wine’s ABV to check.
What is a standard drink in Canada?
In Canada one standard drink is 17.05 mL or 13.45 g of pure alcohol, the amount in a 341 mL (12 oz) beer at 5%, a 142 mL (5 oz) glass of wine at 12%, or 43 mL (1.5 oz) of spirits at 40%.
Why is a US drink bigger than a Canadian one?
Each country sets its own definition. The US uses 14 g of alcohol, Canada 13.45 g, Australia 10 g and the UK unit is 8 g. The calculator converts your drink into all four.
Does this estimate my blood alcohol level?
No. Blood alcohol depends on body, food, time and other factors, and no calculator can say whether you are safe to drive. If you have been drinking, do not drive.
Do the calories include mixers?
No. Only the energy from alcohol itself (7 kcal per gram) is counted. Sugary mixers, juice, syrups and the carbohydrates in beer add more.
