Worked example

A 6 x 9 in. paver with a 1/2 in. joint takes up 6.5 x 9.5 = 61.75 sq in., so 144 / 61.75 = 2.332 pavers cover a square foot. A 100 sq ft patio needs 233.2, which rounds up to 234 pavers. With a 10% allowance the order is 257, and 100 to a pallet means 3 pallets and 43 spare.

Method and sources

Formula: pavers per sq ft = 144 / ((length + joint) × (width + joint)), with sizes in inches; pavers = ceil(area × pavers per sq ft × (1 + waste%)). This is geometry, so it needs no published constant. The joint is counted once per paver, which is how a grid of pavers fills an area. 1 sq m = 10.7639 sq ft. Limits: it assumes straight (grid) layouts with a uniform joint. Cut pavers at edges, curves, angled patterns and borders raise the count, so the waste allowance is your estimate rather than a standard figure; follow the manufacturer’s installation guide and your installer’s layout. Interlocking pavers are often laid with narrow joints and spacer bars, so enter the joint your product actually has. The base and bedding sand are in the paver base and sand calculator.

FAQ

How many pavers do I need per square foot?

Divide 144 by the area one paver takes up in square inches including its joint. A 6 x 9 in. paver with a 1/2 in. joint is 2.33 per sq ft; a 12 x 12 in. paver with no joint is exactly 1.

How much waste should I allow for pavers?

It depends on the layout and edges: more cuts mean more waste. No single figure applies, so lay the pattern out on a sketch and enter your own allowance.

Does the joint width matter?

Yes. Going from no joint to 1/2 in. on a 6 x 9 in. paver cuts coverage per paver from 54 to 61.75 sq in., about 14% more area per paver, so you need about 12.5% fewer.

Does this include the base and sand?

No. Use the paver base and sand calculator for the aggregate and bedding sand.
