How the sizes are calculated
- Overlay door: width = opening width + left overlay + right overlay; height = opening height + top overlay + bottom overlay.
- Inset door: width = opening width − left reveal − right reveal; height = opening height − top reveal − bottom reveal. A common reveal is 1/8″ per side.
- Pair of doors: each door width = (total width from the formula above − center gap) ÷ 2. Height is unchanged.
- Hinges: the count comes only from the rule you type in, compared with the finished door height. This page does not hard-code a manufacturer table.
Overlay, reveal and construction type
Overlay is how far the door covers past the edge of the opening; reveal is the visible gap between a door and its neighbour or the frame. Face-frame cabinets have a frame on the front, so the opening is the frame opening and overlay is measured from the frame edge. Frameless (European-style) cabinets have no frame, so the opening is the carcass interior and overlay is measured from the side panel or shelf edge. The arithmetic is the same for both; only where you measure changes. For the overlay a given hinge produces, follow the hinge maker’s data, not a default.
Results are rounded to the nearest fraction you choose, and the decimal value is shown alongside. Confirm the sizes against your hardware, door thickness and shop tolerances, and cut a test door first.
