Counts exclude waste and assume running or stack bond with solid, fully bedded brick.

Worked example

Modular brick (nominal 4 x 2-2/3 x 8 in.) with 3/8 in. joints needs 675 bricks per 100 sq ft, or 6.75 per sq ft. A 200 sq ft wall needs 200 x 6.75 = 1,350 bricks before waste. With a 10% allowance that is 1,485 bricks. Mortar is 5.5 cu ft per 100 sq ft, so 200 sq ft takes 11 cu ft.

Method and sources

Formula: bricks = net wall area × (bricks per 100 sq ft / 100); with waste = bricks × (1 + waste%); mortar = area / 100 × cu ft per 100 sq ft. Every size, count, specified dimension and mortar figure is transcribed from Brick Industry Association Technical Note 10, Dimensioning and Estimating Brick Masonry (February 2009; retrieved 2026-10): Table 1 (modular sizes), Table 2 (non-modular sizes) and Table 4 (quantity estimates, which exclude waste). Metric counts are the table’s per 10 sq m figures divided by 10. Limits: the table assumes running or stack bond and solid brick laid in full mortar beds. Bonds with headers add brick (TN 10 Table 6), hollow brick laid on face shells use less mortar, and TN 10 tells the estimator to modify counts for breakage and waste without giving one percentage, so the waste field is yours to set. Confirm quantities with your brick supplier.

FAQ

How many bricks per square foot?

Modular brick (nominal 4 x 2-2/3 x 8 in.) is 675 per 100 sq ft, which is 6.75 per sq ft. Standard (non-modular) brick is 655 per 100 sq ft, or 6.55 per sq ft. Both exclude waste (BIA TN 10, Table 4).

Does the joint size change the brick count?

In TN 10 Table 4 each size has one brick count for both 3/8 in. and 1/2 in. joints, because the specified brick gets slightly smaller as the joint gets wider. The joint does change mortar: modular brick takes 5.5 cu ft per 100 sq ft at 3/8 in. and 6.9 cu ft at 1/2 in.

How many bricks per square metre?

TN 10 lists 727 modular bricks per 10 square metres, about 72.7 per square metre, before waste. Other sizes are in the chart above.

What about brick walls with headers?

TN 10 Table 6 adds a net fraction for bonds that use full headers, for example one extra brick for every five in common bond with headers every fifth course. Use the bond pattern guide for those counts.
