Royalty = sales x rate, less 5% of it above a 10% rate, less 35-50% of it on referred sales. $1,500.00 in sales at 15% with 30% referred nets $186.75.

Worked example
$1,500 in royalty-eligible sales at a 15% rate gives a gross royalty of $225.00. Because 15% is above 10%, the Excess Royalty Fee takes 5% of that, $11.25. With 30% of sales referred and a 40% Marketing Royalty Fee, a further $27.00 comes off. You receive $186.75, an effective 12.5% of sales. At a 10% rate the same month would pay $132.00, and the lowest rate above 10% that beats it is 10.6%.
How it works
Zazzle's Creator FAQ, effective 1 April 2025, sets royalty rates from 5% to 50% on physical products. A 5% Excess Royalty Fee applies to the gross royalty when your rate is above 10%. A Marketing Royalty Fee of 35% to 50% of the gross royalty, set by product department, applies to sales referred by Zazzle's marketing or an Ambassador link.
Both fees are a share of the gross royalty, not of the rate. The FAQ's own example: a 14.9% rate on a $100 product nets about $14.16, not $9.90. The FAQ also says sales you drive through your own Self-Promotion Link earn a Referral Commission that offsets the Marketing Royalty Fee, so treat those as not referred here.
The break-even row shows the lowest rate above 10% that out-earns a 10% rate. Department rates are in Zazzle's fee table; Instant Downloads follow a 5% to 99% range and are not modelled. Everything runs in your browser; nothing you type is sent or stored.
