Worked example

1,000 carts created and 300 orders completed: 1,000 - 300 = 700 abandoned, so the rate is 700 / 1,000 = 70%. At an $80 average cart, the abandoned carts hold 700 x $80 = $56,000. Recovering 5% of them is 35 orders and $2,800 of revenue, or $1,120 of gross profit at a 40% margin.

How it works

Shopify defines cart abandonment as a customer adding items to their shopping cart but not completing the purchase. The rate is that share of carts: abandoned carts / carts created. It is the direct arithmetic of that definition.

Count carts and orders the same way. If carts are sessions with an add-to-cart and orders are all purchases, the rate will be wrong. Completed orders cannot exceed carts here.

The recovery share is your own assumption about how many abandoned carts a reminder, retargeting or checkout fix brings back. Test it and enter what you measure; this page does not supply a recovery benchmark.

Recovered revenue = abandoned carts x recovery share x average cart value. Not every abandoned cart was ever going to become an order, so the revenue in abandoned carts is an upper bound, not a forecast.

Sources and basis (opened 2026-10-18): How To Reduce Cart Abandonment and Close Sales - Shopify. The cart abandonment definition is from the Shopify page. The rate, recovery and profit figures are arithmetic on your inputs.

Inputs are user-entered figures. Results are planning estimates, not financial advice or a forecast of future performance. Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent or stored.

FAQ

How do you calculate cart abandonment rate?

Subtract completed orders from carts created, divide by carts created, and multiply by 100. 700 abandoned out of 1,000 carts is 70%.

What counts as an abandoned cart?

Shopify defines it as a customer adding items to the cart but not completing the purchase.

What recovery rate should I use?

Use your own measured result from a reminder email, retargeting test or checkout change. This page deliberately does not suggest a benchmark.

Is the abandoned cart value money I lost?

No. Many carts are never going to convert, so it is the ceiling on what recovery could return. The recovered figures use only the share you enter.
