VA combined rating.

Enter each service-connected rating and see how VA combines them, one step at a time. Ratings are not added together.

VA applies your largest rating first, then each next rating to the efficiency that remains, and rounds to the nearest 10 only once at the end. For example, 50% and 30% combine to 65%, which rounds up to 70%.

Tick “bilateral” for disabilities of both arms, both legs, or paired skeletal muscles. Two or more ticked ratings get the 10% bilateral factor.

How the working goes

  1. Sort ratings from largest to smallest.
  2. Combine the first two: the second rating applies only to the efficiency left after the first (60% then 40% is 60 + 40% of the remaining 40, which is 76).
  3. Combine that whole-number result with the next rating, and so on. Each step uses the whole number shown in VA’s Combined Ratings Table.
  4. Round the final value to the nearest 10; a final 5 rounds up.
  5. Bilateral: combine the paired ratings, add (not combine) 10% of that value, and treat the total as a single rating in the order of severity. If that would lower your result, 38 CFR 4.26(d) says the most favorable outcome is used, and this tool checks that too.

Official sources: 38 CFR 4.25, combined ratings table, 38 CFR 4.26, bilateral factor and VA: About disability ratings. The calculation was checked against every cell of the 4.25 table as published on eCFR on September 30, 2026.

Not a claim decision or legal advice

This is an arithmetic illustration of the published rules. It does not decide, predict or review any claim. Only VA assigns your combined rating, and other rules (for example extremity, amputation or special monthly compensation provisions) can affect your actual rating.
