What a Social Security credit is

A quarter of coverage, which SSA now usually calls a Social Security credit, is the basic unit that decides whether a worker is insured under the program. SSA says no matter how high your earnings are, you cannot earn more than four credits in one year. The credits are counted from your total covered wages and self-employment income for the calendar year, so you might work all year to get four credits or earn enough for all four in a few weeks.

Credits decide eligibility, not the size of the benefit. SSA is explicit that extra credits do not raise your benefit, because the average of your earnings over your working years sets the monthly amount. SSA uses the number of credits you have to determine eligibility for retirement or disability benefits, for Medicare, and for your family's survivors benefits.

Earnings needed for one credit, 1978 to 2027

Since 1978 employers have reported wages once a year, and the law credits one quarter of coverage for each $250 of annual earnings in 1978. After that the amount changes automatically each year with the national average wage index. It rose from $250 in 1978 to $1,970 in 2027, and it was flat only once, between 2010 and 2011, at $1,120. The right column is the amount needed for the full four credits in that year.

For years before 1978 a person generally got a quarter of coverage for each quarter with $50 or more in wages, or four quarters for a year with $400 or more of self-employment income.

How the 2026 amount was calculated

SSA prints the formula for 2026. The credit amount is the 1978 figure of $250 multiplied by the ratio of the national average wage index for 2024 (69,846.57) to the index for 1976 (9,226.48): $250 × 69,846.57 ÷ 9,226.48 = $1,892.56, which rounds to the nearest $10 as $1,890. The law also says the result cannot fall below the prior year's amount, which was $1,810 for 2025, and $1,890 is higher, so it stands. For 2027 SSA's fact sheet lists $1,970.

How many credits each benefit needs

SSA says you need 40 credits to be eligible for retirement benefits, and nobody needs more than 40 for survivors benefits. Disability uses two tests. The recent work test depends on your age when the disability begins: before age 24 you may be eligible with six credits in the three years ending when the disability starts; from 24 to 31 you generally need credit for working half the time between age 21 and the onset; at 31 or older you generally need at least 20 credits in the 10 years before the disability began. The duration of work test is separate, and statutorily blind people only need to meet it.

Worked example with real numbers

This is a hypothetical part-time worker. In 2026 the worker earns $5,000 in covered wages. $5,000 ÷ $1,890 is 2.6, and credits are whole, so the worker earns 2 credits. A third credit needs $5,670 ($1,890 × 3), so the worker is $670 short. A second worker with $8,000 of covered earnings in 2027 earns the maximum of 4 credits, because four credits cost $7,880.

Forty credits at the maximum of four a year takes at least ten years of work. Someone who earns the 2026 amount of $7,560 or more every year reaches 40 credits in ten calendar years, while someone who earns only $3,780 a year, two credits at the 2026 rate, would take twenty.

Common mistakes and edge cases

Who this is for and what it does not cover

This page is for workers checking how close they are to 40 credits, people helping a parent or spouse understand eligibility, and anyone who needs the credit amount for a specific past year. It does not look up your own earnings record, decide eligibility for any benefit, or estimate a benefit amount. Your credits are shown on your my Social Security account.
