Worked example
Plan 1 and Plan 2 on £38,400 a year. The lowest threshold is Plan 1 at £26,900, so you repay 9% × (38,400 − 26,900) = 9% × 11,500 = £1,035 a year, about £86 a month. This matches the GOV.UK example (£86.31 a month before rounding down).
Formula notes
- Plan 1, 2, 4 or 5: 9% × (salary − threshold). Thresholds a year: Plan 1 £26,900, Plan 2 £29,385, Plan 4 £33,795, Plan 5 £25,000.
- Postgraduate Loan: 6% × (salary − £21,000).
- Several plans, no postgraduate: 9% over the lowest threshold of the plans you hold, as one deduction.
- Postgraduate plus another plan: both amounts are deducted.
- Employers deduct per pay period using monthly or weekly thresholds and round down to whole pounds, so payslip figures can differ by a few pence a month. The balance owed does not change the amount repaid.
- This tool does not project interest or write-off dates, and does not include Self Assessment income or second jobs, which are assessed separately.
