How much upload speed do cloud cameras need?

Home internet plans are usually quoted by download speed, but cameras send video up, so the upload figure is the one that matters. Add the upload bitrate of every camera that streams at the same moment. Keep some upload free for video calls, backups and other devices; the 25 percent default is a rule of thumb, not a standard. If the plan has a monthly data cap, the tool also totals the data over 30 days.

Worked example. Four cameras at 2 Mbps need 8 Mbps of upload. On a 20 Mbps plan with 25 percent kept free, 15 Mbps is available, so the cameras fit, and up to 7 cameras at 2 Mbps would. Streaming continuously for 30 days uses 8 Mbps x 86,400 s x 30 / 8 = 2,592 GB.

Many cloud cameras upload only on motion and at a lower bitrate than they record locally. Use the share-of-day field to model that.

Frequently asked questions

How much upload speed do I need for 4 security cameras?

Four cameras uploading at 2 Mbps each need 8 Mbps. Check each camera’s settings for its real upload bitrate.

Does motion-only upload reduce data use?

Yes. If cameras upload 20 percent of the day, monthly data is about 20 percent of the continuous figure. The peak Mbps stays the same when several trigger together.

Why keep some upload free?

Other devices share the same upload. A spare share of about 25 percent is a rule of thumb, not a published standard.

Is my plan’s upload speed the same as download?

Often not. Some plans have much lower upload than download, so check your plan’s upload figure.

Method

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent or stored.

Scope

Planning arithmetic only. Speeds vary through the day and data caps differ by provider; local privacy rules for cloud video vary. Bitrate, spare share and upload share are your inputs. The 30-day figure uses 30 days.
