Ontario rules in brief

Ontario's own Child Support Guidelines, O. Reg. 391/97, state that the tables set out in the Federal Child Support Guidelines apply for the purposes of the regulation. Enforcement of Ontario support orders is handled by the Family Responsibility Office; see the arrears guide.

How the Ontario table amount is worked out

Schedule I lists income in $1,000 bands. For each band it gives a basic monthly amount plus a percentage of the income above the start of the band. The Guidelines give this example: for a payer with an income of $51,250 and two children in British Columbia, the row starting at $51,000 has a basic amount of $807 and 1.54%, so the monthly amount is $807 + 1.54% x $250 = $810.85.

What the table amount does not include

The table is the starting point under section 3. A court or agreement may add section 7 expenses (child care, health costs above insurance, extraordinary school and activity costs, post-secondary education), and the amount changes if parenting time is shared at 40% or more (section 9), split between parents (section 8), or undue hardship is shown (section 10). The tables cover incomes up to $150,000, and income of $16,000 or less produces a table amount of $0.

Which period these tables cover

These are the 2025 Federal Tables, in force on 1 October 2025. For support owed between 22 November 2017 and 30 September 2025, Justice Canada says to use the 2017 Tables. An order made before 1 October 2025 does not change automatically, though a different table amount could be a change in circumstances that allows a variation.

Frequently asked questions

Which rules apply in Ontario?

Ontario's Child Support Guidelines (O. Reg. 391/97) say the tables in the Federal Child Support Guidelines apply for the purposes of that regulation, so the Ontario table amounts are the Ontario rows of the federal Schedule I.

How much is child support in Ontario for two children at $75,000?

The 2025 Ontario table amount for two children at $75,000 a year is $1,144.00 a month. That is the basic amount only; section 7 expenses and shared-parenting rules can change what is paid.

Which province's table do I use if the parents live in different provinces?

Justice Canada's guide says to use the table for the province where the paying parent lives when one parent has the majority of parenting time. If parenting time is shared or split, use both tables. Use the main table amount calculator to switch provinces.

What if the paying parent earns over $150,000?

The table has a $150,000-or-greater row with a basic amount plus a percentage of income above $150,000. Under section 4 a court may find that inappropriate and set the amount on the income above $150,000 itself.

Is this the same as the official calculator?

It uses the same Schedule I rows and formula. Justice Canada notes its own simplified tables round incomes to the nearest $100, so results can differ by a small amount; only the table in the regulation is the legal version.

Not legal advice

This is general information built from the published Federal Child Support Guidelines tables. It is not legal advice and it is not an official calculation. Only the table in the regulation is the legal version, and a court or agreement can set a different amount. Income for child support is defined by the Guidelines, not by your tax return alone.
