SHA-512 hash generator.
Get the SHA-512 digest of text or a file as hex or Base64. It is computed in your browser with SubtleCrypto and never uploaded.
How to use the SHA-512 generator
- Type or paste text into the box, or choose a file to hash instead.
- Press the generate button and wait a moment for large files.
- Copy the value, then compare it with the checksum or signature you were given.
About SHA-512
SHA-512 produces a 512-bit digest, written as 128 hexadecimal characters. SHA-512 is the largest SHA-2 digest. On 64-bit processors it is often as fast as or faster than SHA-256 per byte, which is why some systems use it for file integrity and key derivation inputs.
Your input stays on your device
The calculation runs in your browser inside a sealed frame that cannot make network requests, so the text, file or key you enter is never uploaded. The advertising on this page sits outside the frame and cannot see what you enter.
- Line endings and trailing spaces change the result, so paste exactly what you mean to hash.
- Hashing is one-way: you cannot recover the original input from the digest.
- If a file and text are both provided, the file is hashed.
About SHA-512
SHA-512 is the largest member of the SHA-2 family in FIPS 180-4. It works on 64-bit words and produces a 512-bit (64-byte) digest, written as 128 hexadecimal characters.
Text is hashed as UTF-8 bytes, and a file is hashed byte for byte. Use it when a vendor publishes a SHA-512 checksum, or when you want a longer digest for content addressing. To compare a download with a published value, use the File Hash Checker.

The empty-input digests are not among the FIPS 180-4 examples; they are the digests of a zero-length message and match OpenSSL in our test suite.

Frequently asked questions
How long is a SHA-512 hash?
512 bits: 64 bytes, 128 hexadecimal characters, or 88 Base64 characters with padding.
Is SHA-512 more secure than SHA-256?
Both are unbroken. SHA-512 has a larger output and security margin on paper, but SHA-256 is already strong enough for integrity and signatures, so choose the one your system or the vendor specifies.
Why does SHA-512 differ from SHA-512/256?
SHA-512/256 and SHA-512/224 are separate functions with their own starting values, not a truncation of SHA-512. This page computes plain SHA-512.
Is my data uploaded?
No. SubtleCrypto hashes the input locally in your browser. Nothing is sent or stored.
Integrity, not password storage
SHA-512 has no known practical attacks. Being fast, it is still not a password-hashing function on its own: use Argon2id, bcrypt or PBKDF2 with a unique salt, as OWASP recommends.
