Inductors in series and parallel
In series inductances add: L = L₁ + L₂ + …. In parallel the reciprocals add: 1/L = 1/L₁ + 1/L₂ + …. These hold only when the inductors’ magnetic fields do not couple, so keep them apart or shielded.
Worked example. 1 mH, 3 mH and 6 mH: in series 10 mH; in parallel 1 ÷ (1 + 0.333 + 0.1667) per mH = 0.6667 mH.
Mutual coupling between nearby coils changes the totals, and each real inductor has its own current rating and winding resistance. Series connection adds the winding resistances too.
Frequently asked questions
How do you add inductors in series?
Add the values: 1 mH + 3 mH + 6 mH = 10 mH.
How do you add inductors in parallel?
Add the reciprocals and invert, the same as resistors in parallel. Here the total is 0.667 mH.
When do these formulas fail?
When the inductors are magnetically coupled, for example wound on the same core or placed close together.
Is it the same as for resistors?
Yes, inductors combine like resistors and unlike capacitors.
What value formats work?
Henries (0.001) or prefixes such as 10m, 100u and 2u2.

Scope and safety
Low-voltage hobby and study use only. Results are ideal-component arithmetic from the formulas shown, not an engineering design or professional advice. Real parts vary with tolerance, temperature and age, so check the datasheet for every part. Never work on mains-powered circuits from a calculator result, and discharge large capacitors safely before handling.
