Car Leasing Calculators
Lease mileage overage calculator.
Lease contracts set a mileage limit and charge a fee for every mile or kilometre over it. Enter the allowance, term, distance driven and months elapsed to project your total at lease end, the overage and its charge, and how much you can drive each month to stay under. Runs in your browser; nothing is sent or stored.

Worked example
A 36 month lease with a 12,000 per year allowance allows 12,000 x 36 / 12 = 36,000 in total. After 12 months you have driven 14,000, a pace of 1,166.7 a month. Projected at that pace over 36 months: 42,000, which is 6,000 over. At $0.25 per mile that is a charge of $1,500.00. To finish exactly on the limit you would need to drive 917 a month for the remaining 24 months. If your lessor sold extra distance up front at $0.15, the same excess would cost $900.00, $600.00 less.
How it works
Allowed total = annual allowance x term / 12. Pace = distance driven / months elapsed. Projected total = pace x term. Overage = projected total - allowed total (never below zero). Charge = overage x your per-unit charge. Distance to stay under = (allowed total - driven) / months remaining.
The FTC says the annual mileage limit in most standard leases is 15,000 or less, that asking for a higher limit will probably increase the monthly payment, and that if you exceed the annual limit you will probably be charged an additional fee when you return the car. The actual limit and fee are in your contract, so both are numbers you type. A straight-line projection will be off if your driving changes, for example after a move or a new commute.
Sources and basis (opened 2026-10-08): Federal Trade Commission, Consumer Advice, “Financing or Leasing a Car”. Statements used: the typical annual mileage limit, the higher-limit-costs-more point and the extra fee for exceeding the limit.
Not financial advice. This is a planning estimate from the numbers you type. Taxes, fees, insurance and lender or lessor terms vary; confirm every figure against your contract or written quote.
FAQ
How much is a lease mileage overage charge?
It is set in your contract as a charge per mile or km over the limit. Multiply it by the excess. The tool does this using the pace you have driven so far; the rate is your number, not a typical one.
How many miles can I drive on a lease?
Whatever your contract allows. The FTC says the annual limit in most standard leases is 15,000 or less, and that a higher limit will probably raise the payment. Check your own allowance.
Is it cheaper to buy extra miles up front?
If your lessor offers to sell extra distance up front, enter their per-mile or per-km price in the optional box to compare it with the overage charge. Ask whether unused prepaid distance is refunded.
Does the tool work in kilometres?
Yes. Use the same unit for the allowance, distance driven and charge. The arithmetic is the same.
What if I am only a few months into the lease?
The projection is less reliable early on because a short stretch of driving may not match your average. Update it every few months with the latest odometer reading.
