Method and limitations
Program figures used (ISED, retrieved October 2026): term loans up to $1,000,000, of which no more than $500,000 for leasehold improvements and new or used equipment and $150,000 for intangible assets and working capital; a registration fee of 2% that the borrower pays and that can be financed; and maximum interest of the lender's prime rate plus 3% on a variable loan, or the lender's single family residential mortgage rate plus 3% on a fixed one. Government coverage on term loans runs up to 15 years for loans made on or after July 4, 2022.
Formulas: registration fee = 2% of the amounts you enter (the tool assumes the fee is figured on those amounts; your lender confirms the base). The payment is the monthly amortization payment on the amounts plus the fee, if financed, at your rate divided by 12.
Worked example: $300,000.00 of equipment and $50,000.00 of working capital, 10 years, 9%, with a 7% reference rate. The fee is $7,000.00, the financed balance $357,000.00, the payment $4,522.33 a month and total interest $185,679.01. The rate cap is 10.00% and no limit is exceeded.
Not calculated: the 2022 ISED bulletin also lists an annual administration fee of 1.25% on term loans. The sources checked do not say how a lender passes it on, so it is left out; ask your lender whether it reaches you. Eligibility (for example gross revenues of $10 million or less), security and approval are the lender's decision. This tool is not run by or connected to the Government of Canada.
