How much sod to order.

Enter the lawn length and width, take off beds or paths, add a waste allowance and get square feet to order, rolls and pallets. Roll and pallet sizes are editable because growers differ. Runs in your browser.

Lawn size

Beds, paths or a patio inside the rectangle, in square feet or square metres to match the units above.
%
Many suppliers suggest 5 to 10 percent for cuts, curves and trimming. Use more for irregular shapes.
Typical rolls are about 10 sq ft (for example 2 ft by 5 ft). Ask your supplier.
Pallets vary, roughly 400 to 600 sq ft. Ask your supplier.

Worked example

A 20 ft by 30 ft lawn is 600 sq ft. A 100 sq ft flower bed inside it leaves 500 sq ft of grass. Adding 5 percent waste gives 525 sq ft to order. At 10 sq ft per roll that is 53 rolls (52.5 rounded up). At 450 sq ft per pallet it is 1.17 pallets, so 2 pallets if you order whole pallets.

How it works

Area = length × width − area to subtract. Order area = area × (1 + waste%). Rolls = order area / roll size, rounded up; pallets = order area / pallet size. Metres are converted to feet first.

What this is not. Roll and pallet sizes differ by grower and grass type, so confirm both before ordering. For an irregular lawn, split it into rectangles and triangles, add them up and enter the total as a single length by width. Sod must be laid within a day or so of delivery, so order close to installation.

Sources and basis (checked 2026-10-06): the formulas are area arithmetic; a 5 to 10 percent waste allowance is a common rule of thumb for cuts and trimming, not a published standard. Roll and pallet sizes are user inputs from your supplier.

FAQ

How many square feet are in a roll of sod?

It varies by grower. Many small rolls are about 10 sq ft (2 ft by 5 ft), while big rolls and slabs are larger. Check with your supplier and enter their figure.

How many square feet are on a pallet of sod?

Often 400 to 600 sq ft, with 450 sq ft common. Enter the number your supplier quotes.

How much extra sod should I order?

About 5 percent for a simple rectangle and 10 percent or more for curves, slopes and many cuts.

Should I order sod or seed?

Sod costs more but gives a lawn right away and handles slopes and erosion better. Use the lawn seed calculator to compare the quantities.
